Headframe is a hoisting tower that connects the underground mine with the surface. Installed directly above the shaft, it supports the lifting and lowering of ore, personnel, and materials, as well as ventilation and drainage systems. When transporting personnel, a cage attached to the end of a wire rope is moved up and down using a winch.

When suspending large equipment into the shaft or replacing the cage elevator, the cage is detached from the wire rope and connected to an ER2M electric chain hoist. Equipped with highly reliable electromagnetic brakes, overload protection, and other safety features, as well as a nickel-plated chain resistant to rust and corrosion, ER2M enables safe and efficient replacement operations.

The fourth and fifth attached photos show large equipment being lowered into the shaft using Crosby G-2130 / S-2130 Bolt Type Anchor Shackles. These shackles are fully zinc-coated and have passed fatigue tests of 20,000 cycles at 1.5 times the rated load. During the replacement of the hoisting rope, the new rope is connected to the old one and pulled into the hoist room over the sheave of the headframe using a winch. Coal offers major advantages as a power generation fuel—it is inexpensive and can be mined in many regions around the world.

However, coal seams are more fragile than those in other types of mines, resulting in a higher risk of roof collapse. In addition, methane gas accumulated in the mine, combined with coal dust, can significantly increase the risk of explosions. Maintaining and expanding mine tunnels safely requires roof support with steel and timber, but steel materials are heavy and difficult to transport manually.

A scraper is a device used in underground mining to collect ore and waste rock from the excavation face and drag it through the tunnel for removal. The ore is gathered using a bucket (scraper blade) attached to wire ropes, and transported to the loading area by pulling it with a winch. Typically, two wire ropes are used to move the winch back and forth, operating the scraper to accumulate the ore.

Salt is used in many areas of daily life, including food, agricultural fertilizers, chemical raw materials, pharmaceuticals, water treatment, and de-icing agents. In certain regions of Germany, ancient crustal movements have made it possible to mine salt on land. At one major salt mine, more than one million tons are extracted annually from depths of 500 to 1,000 meters.

To ensure smooth transportation to the surface, excess salt and backfill materials (*) are temporarily stored in underground storage bunkers.

During the construction of one such bunker, ER2 electric chain hoists played a vital role in safely and precisely lowering heavy equipment and materials to the site. In harsh conditions—over 35°C temperatures and salt-laden air—two ER2 units, with rated loads of 5 tons and 7.5 tons, equipped with a corrosion-resistant aluminum die-cast body and nickel-plated load chain, were installed on curved and straight crane tracks along the access tunnel. These hoists ensured the safe and efficient completion of the underground bunker construction.

A Rope Shovel is a large electric excavator used in open-pit mining to dig and load ore and rock. Compared to hydraulic shovels, it offers greater digging power and is well-suited for excavating hard rock and continuous long-hour operations.

The bucket is operated using wire ropes and can scoop up to 150 tons of rock in a single pass, loading it into massive dump trucks.

A Dragline Excavator is a large machine that uses a long boom (arm) and a massive bucket suspended by wire ropes to excavate by dragging the bucket toward itself. It is primarily used in open-pit coal and metal mines for removing overburden. With a wider excavation range than a Rope Shovel, it can handle significantly larger volumes of earth in a single operation.

Due to its enormous size, relocating the machine after installation is difficult, so maintenance is typically performed within the open pit. Kito Crosby’s extensive product lineup supports safe and efficient maintenance operations.

During Caterpillar track replacement, Crosby 2130 Bolt Type Shackles and Chain Slings are used for removing and installing the tracks. A Gyratory Crusher is a crushing machine that uses a gyrating motion to break down large volumes of rock at once. It is employed in the primary crushing stage of large-scale mining operations and is ideal for processing hard rock such as iron ore and copper ore.

When rocks are fed from above into the bowl-shaped chamber, the central conical Crusher Cone moves in a circular, gyrating motion, continuously compressing and crushing the material. The crushed rock then exits through the bottom of the chamber.

The Gyratory Crusher itself is enormous—smaller units weigh several tens of tons, while larger models can exceed 1,000 tons. Large bulldozers play a vital role in excavation sites, pushing rocks and ore, leveling ground, and building haul roads. Because they constantly operate on rocky, sandy, and muddy terrain in mining environments, regular maintenance of the tracks is essential.

The key tools for track maintenance are LB Lever Hoist and Crosby HR-125 UNC Threads. Tracks are composed of dozens of links, connected at both ends by a Master Link to form a loop. During maintenance, this Master Link must be removed and reconnected, but the tracks are extremely heavy and cannot be handled while under tension.

During the process of separating and concentrating valuable minerals from ore in a beneficiation plant, a large amount of water is used. After use, this water contains many mineral particles and chemicals, making it unsuitable for direct discharge.

To meet national and regional discharge standards, the water must be treated using purification equipment.

ER2 electric chain hoist plays a key role in these water treatment facilities. In Papua New Guinea, two ER2 units (3-ton capacity) are mounted on a monorail and are used to regularly lift multiple water purification pumps located in remote areas for maintenance.

In mining operations, large volumes of water used in facilities such as beneficiation plants are desalinated from seawater for environmental protection and transported through long-distance pipelines. Copper is a metal used in a wide range of applications, including electrical wires, cables, motor coils, printed circuit boards for electronic devices, semiconductor terminals, plumbing systems, and copper tubes for heat exchangers.

In ore, copper exists in the form of compounds called sulfide ores, which cannot be used as-is. To extract metallic copper, smelters employ chemical reactions.

Sulfur is removed from the sulfide ore, and the material is melted at temperatures above 1,200 °C to produce blister copper with a purity of over 99% (almost pure copper). This molten copper is then poured into molds to create metal plates known as Copper Anodes. During this process, Kito Crosby’s lifting equipment is used to transport the molds safely and efficiently.

In Marine Mining, the self-propelled mining machine known as the “Crawler” operates much like a tracked vehicle on land, moving across the seabed while extracting minerals.
